Healthy diets are at the heart of the goals of the UN Food Systems Summit. Yet the global expert community has not coalesced around a common definition of a healthy diet, and comprehensive guidelines to characterize them across contexts are debated. In this session we will explore challenges and gaps to characterizing and achieving healthy diets.
Understanding and addressing these gaps along the fortification supply chain is critical to ensure the quality and safety of fortified products in the food system. This requires accessing and managing information/data along the fortification value chain to trace quality from production to consumption.
On Monday 28 June, the Global Dialogue - Empowering Cities and Local Governments to improve food systems globally will be held. This Dialogue is co-convened by GAIN, the FAO, the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments and the Food Systems Summit Secretariat. The event aims to promote significant actions and commitments towards sustainable urban food systems transformation, through the exchange of perspectives of local governments representatives and various urban food systems stakeholders.

On 17 June 2021, 14:00-16:00 CEST, GAIN, the Netherlands Working Group on International Nutrition (NWGN) and JOGG (Healthy Youth, Healthy Future) are hosting an online independent UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) Dialogue: "Healthy cities, healthy children – a dialogue on lessons from Dutch cities’ systems approaches to prevent childhood obesity globally".
This webinar will discuss the findings of a total of 533 Informal Urban Markets Vendor 'snapshot' surveys, as well as of the 35 interviews and 21 focus groups with a range of urban food systems stakeholders from vendors to local and national government policy makers, and SMEs. These findings are part of a wider rapid assessment, conducted between late 2020 and early 2021, in the aforementioned 6 cities, and which also comprised activities, such as, desktop research and satellite imagery.
Ending hunger and malnutrition in all its forms (including undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity) is about more than securing enough food to survive: what people eat - and especially what children eat – must also be nutritious. Yet a key obstacle is the high cost of nutritious foods and the low affordability of healthy diets for vast numbers of families.
