GAIN received funding from over 25 public and private sector donors, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Global Affairs Canada, and Irish Aid.

During the year, we received funding for the first time from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Expenditure

During the year, we were able to allocate USD 35.1 million to our work, focusing on our three main programme areas - as shown in the chart on the right.

When GAIN began in 2002, we were primarily a large-scale food fortification organisation. Our efforts since then have contributed to making fortified food available to over 1 billion people. Our current strategy is to continue this work with an emphasis on improving the quality of fortified food and the consumption of it, while growing our activities in other programme areas.

A major part of this strategy is expanding our work in transforming food systems. In 2017/2018 this represented 28% of our expenditure and it is projected to rise to 46% of our activity in 2018/19.

Structural expenditure represents administrative and other support costs required to maintain the infrastructure of GAIN and ensure that it has effective governance and management. In 2017/18 these costs represented 15% of total expenditure.
