Dr Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), has received his medal and been made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George for "services to International Nutrition, Food and Agriculture".
This is an award reserved for overseas and international work that honours individuals who have rendered important services in relation to Commonwealth or foreign nations. The Order's motto is "Token of a better age".
Lawrence said of his honour: "It was terrific to meet Prince William for the investiture of the CMG honour at Windsor Castle. The first thing he said after he had placed the medal around my neck was “tell me about GAIN”. I was a bit surprised, but don’t think I fluffed the essential elevator pitch. He then asked me about how the war in Ukraine was affecting our work and subsequently about how our work intersected with climate change. I was beginning to think the GAIN comms team had prepared his talking points!
I was impressed at how well briefed he was and at how well he remembered his briefing (he had 58 other people to get through that day). I emphasised that the UK government needed to restore its international leadership in this domain as soon as possible. All in all a very enjoyable day with my family who have allowed me to pursue these issues in such a focused and sustained way."
