Today, the World Food Programme (WFP) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat a surge in global hunger amid the coronavirus pandemic.
To congratulate on the award, Lawrence Haddad, GAIN Executive Director, sent the following message to David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme.
"Dear David, on behalf of all of us at GAIN many congratulations to you and your our colleagues at WFP on the award of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Hunger seeds conflict and conflict breeds hunger. This is as true today as it has been through the centuries. Incredibly, in a world that has never been more knowledgeable and wealthy, hunger is currently increasing and COVID-19 is exacerbating this increase.

So it is wonderful that the World Food Programme, the UN’s leading operational agency to combat hunger, is acknowledged in this way by receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. The World Food Programme, its staff, its partners and its supporters should be extremely proud of this profound recognition of its role in promoting peace, preventing conflict and averting hunger.
Above all we remember the work done today and since WFP’s inception to support hundreds of millions of the most vulnerable, prompting humanity’s conscience and showing us all the best of human values in the worst of times.
