The Global Health 5050 initiative is both daunting and impressive. Daunting because each year, the bar is raised for organisations trying to advance gender equity, whether it is about definitions and language or about turning words into action; and impressive because each year, more organisations want to take part, to benchmark themselves and to gain insights about how to do better in their programmes and in their operations.
This year’s report focusses on gender equity during a pandemic. We know that COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact on women around the world, whether that is in falling out of the workforce, taking on the majority burden of home schooling, or suffering increased rates of domestic violence, when governments lock down their economies and societies. That’s a salutary reminder that some of the gains hard-won by previous generations of women are still fragile.
"On behalf of Global Health 50/50, we would like to congratulate GAIN for their strong performance in the 2021 Gender and Health Index. By taking deliberate and transparent actions GAIN keeps the pressure on themselves and others in the sector to continue pushing for change, and provides much needed hope that we can achieve gender equality in our quest for health, dignity and social justice for all." Kent Buse and Sarah Hawkes, Co-Directors, Global Health 50/50
"GAIN welcomes the GH5050 report which is an important tool to help organisations improve gender equality in how they operate." said Lawrence Haddad, GAIN's Executive Director. "We all need to take decisive steps to cultivate a culture of gender inclusion in all our work and we will not rest until this is accomplished and until women and girls are treated with the dignity and respect they all deserve", he added.
We are delighted that GAIN has again been recognised as a strong performer in its commitment to gender equity 2021. This reflects the commitment from our Board, leadership from our ED and SMT, expertise from our HR and programmatic teams, to make good choices about gender issues every day, and to support our staff during the pandemic. As a result, we’ve got many of the basics in place.
We all need to take decisive steps to cultivate a culture of gender inclusion in all our work and we will not rest until this is accomplished and until women and girls are treated with the dignity and respect they all deserve.
But we know from our staff we have more to do. The Global Health 5050 Report will challenge us to do this well. Whilst the report focusses on gender, we will use it to help our practices across the full spectrum of diversity and inclusion at GAIN throughout 2021 and beyond.
