EatSafe: Evidence and Action Towards Safe, Nutritious Food

EatSafe: Evidence and Action Towards Safe, Nutritious Food is a USAID-funded, five-year program aiming to enable lasting improvements in the safety of nutritious foods in informal markets by focusing on the consumer.  Program partners will implement and test a series of interventions to substantially improve food safety, working with vendors and creating consumer demand for safe nutritious foods. Read more about the program in this one-page brief.

EatSafe has three main goals

Goal 1

Consolidate and generate knowledge and evidence about consumer values and perceptions related to food safety; gender roles and norms that may influence food-related behavior among consumers, vendors and other actors; and quantified food safety risks in traditional markets.

Goal 2

Develop and test interventions and tools to support their implementation for consumers and traditional market vendors to communicate about and/or reduce food safety risks

Goal 3

Generate evidence of the impact of these interventions to engage and empower consumers and market actors to better obtain safe, nutritious foods.

The program will be implemented in two phases in each country

  • Phase I: Building the foundation for success: Consolidate evidence, fill context-specific knowledge gaps, and test innovative consumer- and vendor-facing tools to create demand and reduce risk.
  • Phase II: Gathering new knowledge and evidence to inform future programming: Implement a series of experimental interventions to generate new evidence on how to engage with and empower consumers to demand safe, nutritious foods.

EatSafe is led by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute, Pierce Mill Entertainment and Education, and the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics.

The vision for EatSafe is to expand as a multi-country program, aligning specific countries with concurrent USAID missions in that region, as well as other local stakeholders. Specific activities packages, as well as focus value chains and geographies, will vary by country and will be defined in close consultation with USAID, local government and other local stakeholders. Currently, EatSafe is fully staffed and operating with Mission concurrence in Nigeria and Ethiopia.
