GAIN Interview Cruncher - Embrace Equity
For GAIN & partners, embracing equity and inclusion can have positive impacts on the food systems’ many challenges of ensuring food security and nutrition for a growing population and how to be feeding the plenty, supporting the livelihoods of millions of people working in the food supply chain, and doing so in a sustainable green lens. But the problem we see is that there is not enough data and evidence to prove this.
For this Interview Cruncher, we would like to introduce you to a series of women who defeated boundaries and created a career for themselves, often in a male-dominated environment. They will discuss how eliminating inequity for women is an ethical imperative.
The story of Joana, a vegetable seller in Mozambique
Joana Celestina is a vendor at the central market in Mozambique: "After losing my husband, and with a family to look after, I had to wipe away my tears and battle to provide for my family. I realised I needed to be the breadwinner of the family, and I became a vendor at the Munhava Market in Beira city".

My passion and sense of achievement when I accomplish my work and helped the most unreached person in my country.
What advice would you give to women starting out their careers?
Believe in yourself, never compromise your values or principles, put in the hard work and more importantly, always be consistent in the quality of work that you deliver.

Do not feel shy as a woman and be determined to reach your destination.

The chance to make an impact. It is important that I am part of something that is bigger than myself.
What does equity mean to you?
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach to address the myriad of issues around us, it is tailor-making solutions that have at their core, the context and realities they seek to address.
