Food Environment: Cities shaping climate resilient and healthy food futures for all

Food Environment: Cities shaping climate resilient and healthy food futures for all

On 21 October 2021, GAIN is hosting the session 'Food Environment: Cities shaping climate resilient and healthy food futures for all' at the 7th Global Forum of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP) in Barcelona (19-21 October 2021).

The session will focus on how cities are envisioning and actively shaping climate resilient, food environments that can advance healthy diets for all, between the 'here and now' and the future.

Speakers include representatives from the City of Cape Town, the City of Windhoek, the City of Nairobi, associate professor Jane Battersby from the University of Cape Town and Simon Heck from CGIAR. The session will be chaired by GAIN’s Director of Programme Services, Saul Morris and moderated by Dr Min Cho (University of Leiden, The Netherlands).

Cities’ food environments are a nexus of climate, people and food systems. As cities in Africa and Asia rapidly grow and become a dominant feature in the landscape, against the backdrop of accelerated climate change, so too are people’s diets and livelihoods shifting. City residents’ diets, across the socio-economic spectrum, are increasingly unhealthy with a rise in overweight/obesity and undernutrition. African and Asian cities are vulnerable – not least to impacts of climate change, food accessibility and good health and well-being. Visit www.foodactioncities.org to see examples of actions that cities undertake to transform their food system.

The theme of this MUFPP 7th Global Forum is "Growing Resilience: Sustainable Food to Tackle the Climate Emergency". In the lead up to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow in November 2021, the 7th MUFPP Global Forum in Barcelona will raise cities’ voices on the food climate nexus.

This Forum is by invitation only. Registration is reserved for the delegations of signatory cities of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact and those cities committed to advancing urban food policies. All mayors may be accompanied or represented by members of their delegations. Experts and the scientific community, international agencies, city networks, and international civil society groups focusing on food and cities are also welcome to participate in this Global Forum.
