COVID-19 qualitative assessment factsheet


Understanding urban specific contexts and food system challenges during the pandemic is the first step towards the co-design of policy options. Between December 2020 and April 2021, GAIN conducted a mixed method Rapid Needs Assessment of the urban food system in Machakos and Kiambu (Kenya), Beira and Pemba (Mozambique), and Rawalpindi and Peshawar (Pakistan).  

A diversity of urban food system stakeholders, including policymakers, traditional food market vendors and market committees and Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) were engaged. Activities included:

  1. Mapping stakeholders, urban food system and food related governance; and then 
  2. Conducting a Rapid Needs Assessment using market surveys, key informant interviews and focus groups as well as desktop research and satellite imagery analysis. 

A selection of key findings from this assessment was shared directly (in-person and/or zoom workshops as well as via printed copies) with stakeholders. Findings from the qualitative assessment were presented in three factsheets, covering two cities per each of the three countries. These factsheets are available to view/download below and are available in English (All), Swahili (Kenya), Portuguese (Mozambique) and Urdu (Pakistan).
