EatSafe Surveys for Insights into Markets during COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional markets pose significant risks for both vendors and consumers. Working or shopping in crowded, risky environments, and falling ill will have devastating effects on families and household nutrition security. Markets must remain open so that consumers can access nutritious food and vendors and their supply chains can maintain their livelihoods.

To assess market functioning under COVID-19 and strengthen the voice of vendors and consumers in the pandemic response and recovery, EatSafe conducted regular surveys in two traditional markets in each country. Summarized in this results brief, detailed results are presented Bulletin Summary reports, and Traditional Market Reports (TMRs), and the Food Price Monitoring Tool.

Bulletin Summaries include six countries and time periods:

  • Bangladesh,  September 2020 - December 2021
  • Ethiopia,  November 2020 - February 2021
  • Kenya,  September 2020 - November 2021
  • Mozambique, July - December 2021
  • Nigeria,  October 2020 - November 2021
  • Tanzania,  January - August 2021

TMRs include four countries. Bangladesh, Kenya, and Nigeria each have four issues released in January, March, June, and December 2021, while Tanzania has a single issue covering the same time period released in January 2022.

EatSafe’s Food Price Monitoring Tool is an interactive data visualization platform. Explore trends in food prices (in both USD and local currencies) in response to COVID-19.
