Urban Governance: Keeping Food Markets Working Policy and Coordination Materials

Since September 2020, GAIN’s Keeping Food Markets Working (KFMW) during and beyond COVID-19, policy and coordination endeavours have sought an (evidential) understanding of local urban food environments, especially around urban traditional food markets. This has been followed by the participatory co-design of policy options as well as food systems data dashboard prototypes, that local policymakers, in six cities and/or urban counties can adopt.

The six cities/urban counties are: Beira and Pemba (Mozambique), Machakos and Kiambu (Kenya) and Rawalpindi and Peshawar (Pakistan). These efforts aim to enhance good governance and urban food and nutrition focused market resilience – with an emphasis on vulnerable urban communities, like those with low incomes and applying a gender lens.

An Expert Advisory Panel comprising 12 members (international and local), of which at least two are based in each country (Mozambique, Kenya, and Pakistan), are part of this GAIN initiative. They offer a range of expertise, such as, public health, food systems, food safety, Small and Medium Sized [food related] Enterprises, and governance. 80% of the panel are women. Additionally, there are two GAIN co-chairs, Dr Ann Trevenen-Jones who is based in Europe and Obey Nkya who is based in Africa.

The six city/county level co-designed policy toolkits will be available for download via this page and will also be disseminated via hard copies with supporting in-country GAIN presentations, later in 2021. Links to learnings and a case study about the three city/county level (Kiambu, Beira and Rawalpindi) food systems data dashboard prototype/s will also be available via this page, later in 2021.
