GAIN Congratulates the City Winners of the 2022 Milan Pact Awards


Rio de Janeiro, 25 October 2022 - 

GAIN proudly congratulates the winning cities of the 2022 Milan Urban Food Policy Pact Awards. Executive Director, Lawrence Haddad was part of an international jury of experts who evaluated the urban food systems practices, submitted by cities, across six categories: Governance, Sustainable Diets and Nutrition, Social and Economic Equity, Food Production, Food Supply and Distribution and Food Waste.

Announced at the 8th MUFPP Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (17-19 October 2022) the winning cities and their practices per category are:

  • Governance: New York (United States) - The New York City development plan for public procurement
  • Healthy and Sustainable Diets: Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) - Addis Ababa School Feeding Program
  • Social and Economic Equity: Rourkela (India) - E-Cool Mandi
  • Food Production: Rosario (Argentina) - Agro-ecological food production in Rosario
  • Food Supply and Distribution: Yeosu (South Korea) - Strategy to Protect Talent and Small Farms
  • Food Waste: London (United Kingdom) - London Food Waste Reduction Plan

Acknowledging their impressive food system practices, the following cities received special mention:

  • Governance: Araraquara (Brazil), Mouans-Sartoux (France), Vancouver (Canada)
  • Healthy and Sustainable diets: Copenhagen (Denmark), Paris (France), Torres Vedras (Portugal)
  • Social and Economic equity: Los Angeles (United States), Melbourne (Australia), Wroclaw (Poland)
  • Food Production: Bandung (Indonesia), Curitiba (Brazil), Mexico City (Mexico)
  • Food Supply and Distribution: Baltimore (United States), Barcelona (Spain), Lyon (France)
  • Food Waste: Cincinnati (USA), Guelph (Canada), Quelimane (Mozambique)

The 8th MUFPP Global Forum theme of: Food to Feed the Climate Justice: urban food solutions for a fairer world, recognises efforts by cities and regions to be address food systems transformation with a climate lens while also encouraging focused debate on: Can cities shape climate justice solutions? What role can food play in mitigating the climate crisis and promoting social inclusion? Can food feed the climate justice?
